*THE URGE IS HERE! THE URGE TO TALK STAR WARS
You know the Star Wars sequels are a good example of how not to do serial storytelling. Like it has a beginning middle and end, yet the feel very separate from each other. Which the others don't.
So I'm going to be weird about it and compare it to Dragon Ball. Because I don't do things the normal way and yes I'm doing this to kind of make a point. Also everyone know DB so it's easy to talk about.
So why am I doing Dragon Ball well it was a serialized manga built on arcs, cliffhanger and shows how you do that storytelling. Dragon Ball was often not planed either but there is kind of consistent through line.
Dragonball for better or for worse was built on the idea of Goku as a martial arts story filtered through Toriyama idea of what that should be. For better or for worse Goku changed because he was always trying to figure out to make things easier in some way.
and as weird as it is to think about there is a mystery about Goku, like what the whole deal with his tail is and everything about him like we take for granted that the saiyan stuff is a twist. I would not call it a real retcon. But let's go over comparisons.
Goku is one of those cases of being a nobody but also acknowledging something special that does make sense. Goku changes from hard work(and that water) and while he doesn't care for his past we know his motivation.
Vegeta is kind of how you should do Kylo Ren, like he never get his goal and learns to grow from it while also battling his issues constantly. Like even during the Buu arc with the Majin stuff is kind of better then his thing with Han.
But let's talk about villains which I think is the worst thing about the sequels...okay maybe not the worst thing but villains in Dragon Ball are some of the best out there and show a here's the thing Toriyama also tried to subvert expectations constantly.
Commander Red is a pretty subversive character, because he just wants to be tall and will use that ONE MOTIVE to have people die for him so he get the dragon balls it's also just funny making him a more interesting character then just THRONE DUDE WHO DIES.
but my point comes down to this Disney knew it had three movies to make, Dragonball never had that, it constantly had to keep things moving and have an arc, so villains had to be defeated at the end and even then Goku didn't win every fight. He had to keep up suspense.
All right guys I'm going to talk about Tien seriously here for this bit I know, I'm shocked. But Goku lost his first fight with him, and his fight with others, why? To Show that Goku had to go up. He had to step up and do you want to know what else showed that?
FUCKING EMPIRE STRIKES BACK WITH LUKE TRAINING UNDER YODA! See you bring it around. Yeah luke lost hard and it follows he has a lot to learn so and he's not finished yet.
This bring up why Kylo and Rey are kind of bad in different ways, with Kylo they had to bring back Palpatine because Kylo lost twice you can't have your villain lose twice in a row. Let's talk a look at DB.
Toriyama knew when to make things personal hell the Frieza arc had him kill Krillen to make this happen Toriyama put in stakes beyond just saving everyone, and hell as weird as it sounds....
The Broly movie is a better adaption of Return of the Jedi. Because at the end of the day the drama comes from trying to save Broly in this movie, I know some people don't like super stuff but I feel it makes my point about
how the star wars movies kind of fail to bring out that personal touch. Because Rey kind of just fights only to I don't know, does she fight for her friends? Does She fight because it's right? Does She fight because she's a fangirl? What is her motive? Because I know what Goku is
Look I'm not saying Dragon Ball....okay look Dragon Ball is good there is a reason it's popular and the reason I compare is to make the point that serial storytelling is used in it and Star Wars. There are just things that work but you have to make MOTIVES CLEAR and have an arc.
Goku is not a complex..okay he kind of is in the original manga. There is a bit more bite to him in it. But my point is that Goku has a simple motivation and it takes him everywhere in the universe, and the fact is Rey is in a constant fight between visions.
I think one of the reasons TLJ gets love is that critics want to look at it as a singular film that comments on the franchise rather then the fact it's a sequel where you tell me that oh this bit didn't matter, at least when Toriyama forgot he didn't leave something worse off.
I'm just saying that serial storytelling isn't new and people can learn from it, and it's a lot of places just very rarely film. Because films are often made to be finite. But this is Star Wars and you know you have at least 3 movies to tell a story.
and I don't know why they didn't think ahead at least to the next film. Cause for all the worts with Lucas he even made a novel possible tv special to tie things up if he didn't get another movie, and that's kind of what I mean. Serial storytelling is this weird thing apparently
My point at the end of the day is that DB despite how some people feel about it as face of Shonen does a lot of things right that new Trilogy doesn't, and I'm just saying Toriyama is LEGENDARY FOR FINDING WAYS TO BE LAZY and yet he makes it work. Star Was didn't...
Now the urge is gone I can now be Star Wars free for two months....maybe....hopefully.....
