In the wake of yesterdays martyrdom of Indian soldiers at Chinese hands, and with growing calls of India-US-Taiwan kind of alliance, some are asking my opinion, especially given that semiconductors could be an area of interest for all three. (1/8)
I am not an expert at geopolitics (if I were, I would have probably written an article, not a twitter thread). Also,I will keep numbers/players mentioned in the link below for 1Q20 foundry market share (snapshot embedded) (2/8)

TSMC is Taiwan based, Samsung is South Korea, GlobalFoundries is Mubadala (UAE) owned with fabs in US, Germany, Singapore (& support center in Bangalore), UMC again is Taiwan based and SMIC is China based (and its biggest). Towerjazz is Israel based (3/8)
I have quoted three news bits related to the first three players above in my ORF article here and also about India's efforts and possible market. Please read the full article if you haven't https://www.orfonline.org/expert-speak/an-inflection-point-for-indias-semiconductor-fab-ambitions-67822/ (4/8)
AFAIK, no solid news of TSMC pulling out of China yet. Just rumours/suggestions for eg: https://www.fool.com/investing/2020/05/22/is-tsmc-becoming-a-pawn-in-the-trade-war-between-t.aspx "The Chinese govt.. could retaliate against TSMC's plants in Shanghai and Nanjing for halting Huawei's orders". Shanghai's is an 'old' 200mm one, Nanjing 300mm (5/8)
Also looks like some senators are opposing TSMC proposed growth in US.. perhaps pre-election thing, but there are 'genuine' concerns of, there is no big US based/owned foundry - US may push not just to "host" foundry, but to "own" some big ones.

India so far is no where in the picture. IMO GoI should go all out, publicise the June-2 announced SPECS/EMC2 schemes (25% and 50% reimbursement offers), be open to policy/clause negotiations. Right away aiming for <28nm may not work, aim >28nm. see https://anysilicon.com/wafer-capacity-by-feature-size-shows-rapid-growth-at-below-10nm/ (7/8)
Also, dont focus only on Taiwan. South Korea is a good friend, so is UAE/Mubadala (not just the govts, you know what I mean..). I will end this by asking - how many Indian investors even know this website of used and surplus fab equipment for sale ?(8/8) https://www.globalfoundriesusedequipment.com/
