Covid: I am going to admit to little known fact. I play Game of Thrones a multiplayer game that is low key & escapist. Games like this have chat function: anyone can post. Most chat total nonsense. BUT casual observation shows 50% of people think Covid not serious or not real.
Not kidding. On rare attempts to determine the explanatory model I hear: it's the flu, it's another pneumonia, it's not so bad. Makes me realize what a terrible job medical professionals have done in explaining risks to regular people.
The early over-reaction in states with few/no cases led to disbelief mostly in middle of the country and south. People from the northeast take it the most seriously - no surprise. And to the degree it is discussed preaching social distancing? Not going back to that.
On chat people talk about the non-socially distanced crowds on TV and the lack of visible warnings about crowds and contagion. And they talk about protests/defiance that will happen if state governments try to close them down again.
Ok this is a game - tens of thousands of players, only and an unscientific look at Chat and I can't take a poll. So I explored threads on Twitter that trended towards MAGA and it's the same thing. And since it is a place I am anonymously looking in on, for sure no polls.
But consistent with my observations the latest national polls show declining concern about Covid in the US with less concern among Republicans than Democrats. Does this reflect geography of Covid.
The medical/scientific professions double talk about masks has not helped. Going from: they are absolutely no good to leave them for medical professionals to please wear a mask is not heard, except for those from Northeast, Italy and Spain.
It's as if MDs lost their minds and failed to realize that when it comes to health issues the average person needs early & clear message that is not reversed on what seems a whim. The message on masks should have: been wear a mask it will help, here are directions to make a mask.
At this point the regular person won't believe Covid is happening until it's at their door - when Uncle Jim gets it and dies, when the neighbor is hospitalized, when they go to the ER and see docs done up in scary PPE.
For those talking about masks, talk on. The Northeast is listening. But Texas - not so much. Maybe not at all. We can preach social distancing maybe a few will listen. For those talking closures I really hope states don't try. I think it will lead to more protest/defiance.
And the unintended consequence will be even more infections. I recommend getting out of the Twitter echo-chamber and seeing how most others think. Do it in a game or do it at the hardware store or peak in on a different Twitter echo chamber of people you disagree with. ☹️
