one thing i don't see in the game review discourse is how it's professionally dangerous to dislike games that have a certain level of prestige, and how this affects review scores in some pretty noticeable ways
i have been there and felt these feelings. you know the amount of shit you'll get because of a low review score and you end up giving a game the benefit of the doubt more often than not. is it really worth risking employability and access in an ever-shrinking job market?
one thing i forgot to add: i was in the industry for a decade and saw that roughly 80% of the press goes on to work for publishers, since games press jobs are unsustainable by design. do you think this doesn't encourage game critics to "play ball" more often than not?
the joke that's not really a joke i tell is "oh, i could never work at [company], i have too many public opinions"
