It seems people need a reminder of why this is a problem.

Job keeper goes to people who are or would be stood down when their employer's revenue drops beneath a threshold depending on the org size. It does not go to the employer (but it does go through them).
Churches take two collections from parishioners, the first supports the priest and some support staff. The second supports charity and other activities in the immediate area (the parish or parishes - administrative divisions of areas like LGAs but for religious purposes)
"BUT CHURCHES PAY NO TA-"

Shut the fuck up. That has nothing to do with Job Keeper, if it did the majority of the ASX running profits through Dutch/Irish sandwiches would see no staff get Job Keeper either. It's a point, but it's either invalid or pervasively valid, so useless.
Tax evasion bad, we get it water-drop broken.

When the pandemic hit, churches closed. The bishop tried to stack on a tantrum but health authorities rightly pointed out churches are broadly full of old, frail people singing and spitting on each other, then sharing wine cups.
So the revenue of those churches (revenue, not profit, read a book) went to 0, making the priests eligible for Job Keeper, but the diocese doesn't have any other support for the second collection they lost. That's too bad, but it is what it is.
What the diocese of Parramatta is alleged to have done, is what has been fairly rampant in the private sector, and ask for half of the job keeper to come back to them. That's a scam, and it's right that they're investigated and if it's substantiated, they should get whacked.
But it has nothing at all to do with
- Tax status
- Asset values of the church
- Whether a religious job is a job
- Any-other crack-addled idea you have about how you dislike an organisation so its employees should starve to death
So every water-drop weirdo on Twitter trying to simultaneously maintain the impression of progressivism but advocating that charity workers should be destitute, take a pretty hard look at yourselves.
