gonna get cancelled, but being a "young """scholar"""" in gr*d school amidst a generation of tumblr-level-of-analysis """scholars""" obsessed w identity & representation is a drag -- ppl have actually thrown hands bc i read french theory, dead yt men etc it's frustrating lol
if u are engaging in intellectual work it's frankly inadequate/lazy for ur *main* contribution to be like "don't read [white man theorist]! read [marginalized identity theorist]! representation!" & not actually like, consider & interpret many texts, think critically about them etc
like actually yes as ""a palestinian-american woman"" reading some ""yt men"" has informed my intellect. it's even informed my thinking regarding my own subject position
the reason i read & *get* d*rrida for ex (mostly get -- no one rlly gets him that's the point) is precisely bc of fraught relationship to identity & whiteness as the ""daughter of a palestinian diaspora immigrant"" ***d*rrida's identity wasn't necessarily "white" either
once was told by fellow ~white-passing~ poc (??) that media theory was too white in a like "ur field of interest is worthless i'm gonna read u as white now" way which was insulting & also stupid for multiple reasons
like yes media theory is far too white & that's bullshit but i'm gonna read it all bc i want to think thru theories of mediation/differential ontology which have inextricable ties w racial capitalism
& yes ngl but d*rrida & st*egler & b*rthes & d*leuze & gu*ttari & fuck even l*can have helped me think about those things
& yes black studies thinkers & critical race studies thinkers & sex workers & hot women online have helped me think about those things
