I'm frustrated today, so please humor me with this rant.
Why does academia/STEM assume I'm able to pick up my life and move to whatever state or country for a job?

Why does academia/STEM assume I'm able to pick up my life and move to whatever state or country for a job?
3 reasons why this is not feasible for me:

1) I'm disabled/chronically ill. I need to be near a major urban area in order to find specialists who know about my condition. It took me 2+ years to find the doctors I have now and I'm still searching for others. I don't want to go through that again.

2) My support system is here and my partner's support system is here. My partner's job (which makes him more money than I will make anytime soon) is here. Why am I expected to leave that?
3) I am a Latinx woman of color. There are many cities in the US that I don't feel comfortable moving to. My partner is also a person of color. Same goes for him.
We also want to live in diverse areas with diverse cuisine. Sounds stupid, but it's important to us.

I get that sacrifices need to be made some times, but reasons like #1 are non-negotiable.
I'll find a great job because luckily I'm in an area which lots of universities and industry jobs but please, please consider this when talking to young academics.
