Just saw a tweet about survivors guilt and I want to address that from a therapeutic standpoint.

Survivors guilt comes having had survived a traumatic experience and feeling guilty because you did.

A lot of us are experiencing that right now. We can’t help but

(1)
Turn on the TV or open social media and see people who look like us, people who look like the people we love, people who identify how we do, being poorly mistreated, beaten, and hung (those ARENT suicides!).

We feel guilty because maybe, things aren’t like that for US

(2)
Personally. Maybe our little corner of the world is still safe when we log off or turn off the TV.

We feel guilty because we can feel like we aren’t doing enough. Or we can feel burnt out because we did so much already!

(3)
We feel guilty because we just want to post our happy content, or watch our happy shows, or just post stupid ass memes.

And I’m here to let you know, that it’s okay to unplug from the world for a while.

Trauma literally re-wires your brain. Over exposure to traumatic things affects you psychologically and physiologically.

You might notice an increase in depression, anxiety, OCD, hyperfocusing, sleep, eating, drinking, smoking, sexual behaviors.

(5)
You might notice an increase in creating more content, playing more video games, reading more (escapism).

You might notice a decrease in motivation, joy, completion of activities of daily living, sleeping.

These are all signs that you’re BURNT out and having a trauma

Response.

The world is fucking shitty right now. It’s scary as fuck for A LOT of us. We’re worrying about our safety, the safety of friends and family, and we’re hypervigilant because of that.

Hyper-vigilance is ONE criteria of PTSD and Acute Stress Disorder.

Taking care of yourself, taking a step back, doesn’t mean you’re a bad person or you no longer care about what’s going on.

Taking a step back means that you are preserving your mental health.

It’s a good thing that you’re still here. That you survived because

You can go on and continue to fight for change, for a better world.

But you cannot do that if you’re pouring from an empty cup.
