Virgin and Airnorth cancelling more flights in/out of Kununurra. Kids booked to go back to school in July. Flight cancelled. Not much out of Broome either. $999 one way Bme-Per on July 21 for Term 2 + 10hr drive. No other option. @MarkMcGowanMP @benwyatt can something be done?
Kimberley boarders need to get back to school. We’ll get our kids there, but what about the Aboriginal kids whose families don’t have the resources? Or the people needing medical treatment in Perth? We need flights & it’s not about tourism. @MarkMcGowanMP @benwyatt @sueellery
Because this is what happens: the community kids don’t get to school. Or get there a week or 2 into term when the mainstream kids have settled back in. Remote kids don’t settle/engage til later. Entrenched disadvantage. Want social change? Get these kids to school. And on time.
So when we ask for flights, let’s cut the rhetoric about the cost of flights for tourists. Remote areas need education and medical access. Every Kimberley flight has essential service providers on it - medical, water & power supplies, education, legal workers. Make it happen.
@Melissa4Durack what can the Cwth do to help? Abstudy covers the community kids flights so there is a direct cost implication to the Cwth with no flights and/or stupidly expensive flights. Big ed & health impacts. It’s only going to get harder and the implications are huge.
