in honor of pride month, here’s some taylor swift songs applied to lgbt themes: a thread✨🏳️‍🌈
1. out of the woods
describing a tumultuous, cautious relationship, the lyric “are we out of the woods yet” and the song’s concept in general describes the fear involved with relationships between individuals in the lgbt community
2. don’t blame me
“for you, i would cross the line.” risking it all for a strong relationship is a common theme with lgbt relationships. “i would fall from grace just to touch your face” explains the leap of faith involved with being in an lgbt relationship.
3. enchanted
“2 am, who do you love, i wonder til i’m wide awake.” this song can be connected to wondering if another person is gay after you meet them, and desperately hoping that they are so that you can have a chance with them.
4. gorgeous
can explain the painful experience of falling for someone straight. “you got a girlfriend, i’m jealous of her” + “i’m so furious at you for making me feel this way” + “you are so gorgeous, it makes me so mad” + “there’s nothing i hate more than what i can’t have”
5. cruel summer
the excitement and fear present in a new lgbt relationship. “it’s new, the shape of your body” + “i don’t wanna keep secrets just to keep you” + “i love you, ain’t that the worst thing you ever heard” can explain the pain that comes even with a strong connection
6. love story
this one is pretty obvious. describes the common “forbidden” lgbt relationship, “we keep quiet cuz we’re dead if they knew.” it relates to unaccepting parents as well— “and my daddy said stay away from juliet”
7. getaway car
“the light of freedom on my face” and “the best of times, the worst of crimes” could be applied to finally entering a relationship in which one feels confident and free to embrace their sexuality.
8. wonderland
“there were strangers watching, and whispers turned to talking” along with “didn’t it all seem new and exciting” perfectly embody the sensation of hesitantly starting a non-straight relationship. this song can describe how thrilling an lgbt relationship can be
9. delicate
fear and hesitation that come w a new lgbt relationship. it’s scary being involved in something different, “is it cool that i said all that, is it chill that you’re in my head?” + “i wonder when you sleep, are you ever dreaming of me?” illustrate this uncertainty
10. it’s nice to have a friend
connecting to the best friends to lovers scenario common with many lgbt relationships. “something gave you the nerve to touch my hand.” explains the evolution from a platonic to romantic relationship perfectly.
11. mean
the lyrics “i’ll walk with my head down, trying to block you out cuz i’ll never impress you” and “i’ll bet you got pushed around, somebody made you cold” describe many lgbt individuals’ views to fire back at homophobic/transphobic individuals, much like YNTCD.
12. dress
“i don’t want you like a best friend” can be applied to the classic best friends to lovers trope. tension described in this song can connect to the hesitation involved in many same sex relationships. “everyone thinks that they know us, but they know nothing about us”
13. i know places
similar to out of the woods, i know places explains the fear and desperation to hide a relationship that may not be approved by the public. “i know places we won’t be found” could explain the feeling of needing to disguise or hide from public criticism
14. dancing with our hands tied
“i loved you in spite of deep fears that the world would divide us” + “you said there was nothing in the world that could stop it, i had a bad feeling” can be directly paralleled to the immense fear often experienced in an lgbt relationship.
15. miss americana and the heartbreak prince
“it’s you and me, that’s my whole world / they whisper in the hallways she’s a bad bad girl” + “i know this is a fight that someday we’re gonna win” explain defying criticism and placing faith in a strong relationship despite fear
16. everything has changed
breaking the barrier between friendship and romance once again. “i just wanna know you better now” + “everything has changed” can explain the new emotions for someone after finding out they like you, too
17. death by a thousand cuts
“i see you everywhere, the only thing we share is this small town.” in small towns, there aren’t many lgbt people to date. you have to see your ex everywhere and block out how loud their presence is because there are very few others like you
18. call it what you want
“all the jokers dressing up as kings, they fade to nothing when i look at him” and “would you run away with me? ‘yes’” could describe a beautiful lgbt relationship which makes the judgement worth it. even with mass criticism, love wins.
