A lot of comics dudes seeing what is going down right now and minimizing it. Like "Well sexual harassment isn't as bad as sexual assault, and grooming isn't as bad as sexual harassment" or shit like that, and I assume they miss the point intentionally.
It's similar (not the same) as what we're seeing with race right now. Police killing people is A Big Problem, but it is not The Problem. The problem is systemic. The problem is a culture. The problem has seeped into every interaction with non-white people. Or in this case, women.
It's not about winning the Struggle Olympics. Comics creators assaulting women is bad. But also being so deeply creepy in public and private is bad. It isn't social awkwardness. It isn't because you were bullied. It isn't because you're a nerd. You're a fucking creep.
If you're in your 30s, ask yourself if you're the best mentor to a teenage girl or woman in her early 20s. Don't make jokes about rape. Don't call people sluts. Don't talk about someone's appearance (positively OR negatively), beyond a "You look great!" Be a fucking professional!
Like everything, it comes down to power an entitlement. Men get a little power, and they feel they are owed something. What's so ridiculous about the comics industry is how laughably small that power really is. They aren't cops or politicians or celebrities. They make kids' books
But power is power in any circle and they WILL keep doing it and they WILL keep getting away with it until not their victims but their PEERS come out and say, in public, in the moment, "Hey Steve, you're a fucking creep, apologize right now."
