A hill I would die on: curated app stores have been hugely, unambiguously good for users and software developers, and especially for user security and privacy. 1/
IMO, Google skewed too open, and Apple has been too restrictive on in-app payment, both to users’ detriment. But the curated app store model itself made software easy, safe, private and secure. It means we can trust that the smallest developer on earth can’t break your phone 2/
There is a certain kind of hard-core tech user that thinks app stores limit your freedom. But freedom for that user is the los of freedom, safety and confidence for the other 4 billion smart phone users. App stores are trust. 3/
And I don’t think anyone can seriously look at the last five years and say it would be better for any random developer to be able to do whatever they want with 4bn people’s phones and data. That’s what app stores protect /4
I don't think Apple's payment terms are sustainable. But sandboxed apps and curated app stores are changes in the model that are as essential as E2E encryption or open source. /end
Just to be really clear: I think is no justification for Apple's policy on Spotify and Kindle. I do think you can make a very strong case for requiring Fortnite to use IAP. And there's a big grey area in the middle.
