MPD Chief Medaria Arradondo is about to address the recent uptick in officers resigning or retiring early -- since the unrest following the death of George Floyd.
I've talked with officers - both who've already quit or are in the process of doing so. They cite a lack of support from police leadership and the overall political climate regarding police officers.
For those close to retirement, they are retiring early, losing some pension money as a result. The only official number we've been given so far is 7, but I've heard the number is higher and the number of those beginning the process is much higher.
A source tells me 78 officers are currently eligible for early retirement. The question is how many of them go through with it or work to the end.
The Chief said the number still stands at 7 who've left. He thanked them and validated concerns of officers who feel a lack of support, plus asked the public not to attack officers doing life-saving measures.
