A cool thing about this fun graph is that the lower levels are actually very representative of the racial/ethnic demographic of the U.S. right now. This should be all the way up. (1) https://twitter.com/ashleyn1cole/status/1272670802341588994
So if you're a white person trying to break in telling a friend who is a POC trying to break in, "Well it'll be easy for YOU," please reframe this in your mind as... "previously, it was too easy for white people like me to break into TV writing."
Also if anyone's wondering why the dip back towards whiteness at the consulting producer level, these are typically writers on overall deals who help out a few days/wk on a show. I don't have fun graphs but anecdotally, people with overall deals are... a pretty white group.
Anyway, this is a great thread. I've long been bummed by diversity programs for writers and shadowing programs for directors. JUST. HIRE. PEOPLE. But while we're here let's go further behind the curtain: top level executives in TV are overwhelmingly white and male.
So you can see ANOTHER fun infographic here - the "class photos" of studios that @richardrushfield of The Ankler put together. https://theankler.com/p/class-photos
Also, while we are here having fun - a reminder that all the diversity in the world doesn't matter if writers or directors are hired out of tokenism - hired for optics but not listened to/trusted.
