Wanted to write abt this and I feel like this is a good space / time...
I’ve been asked to be a part of many collective pushes to white gatekeepers in publishing, art, film, television, and theatre. I haven’t joined any.
There are many reasons but chiefly FUCK WHITE GATEKEEPERS. https://twitter.com/themil10/status/1272900121336975360

A long time ago I gave up on the idea that institutions would do the right thing for someone like me and even less for someone who has fewer privileges than I do, so I decided that the only way to engage w/ them was to ‘mop’ what I could from them in order to build my own one day
Like Dr. Angela Davis said yesterday’s if we look at our trans and non binary bothers and sisters we can see models that liberate us from the oppressive forces to which we regularly capitulate.
That’s where I’ve been looking and from whom I’ve been learning.

I’m lucky to be a successful playwright without children or a mortgage at this moment, because of this I can redistribute my own income into the pockets of ppl in my community who need it (a principle that many friends have been doing online for years).
A problem with so much of the American theatre is that bc its a system that runs like the heteropatriacal companies from which their board members come they reject any radical changes, even when co-opting radical ideas or housing radical thinkers.
They won’t change.
They won’t change.
Reforming their practices will get us nothing but we can create new models we as individuals/collectives (free from those systems of power) can manage. That’s why I got the extra funds from HBO, that’s why I made those pet project grants.
These systems can’t change but we can.
These systems can’t change but we can.
And we have done this before! One of the reasons I created http://www.blackworkbroadway.com and siphoned funds to @TMTCHarlem & @NatBlackTheatre during the run of SLAVE PLAY is that historically work by minoritarian artists has BLOSSOMED in spaces outside of institutional theatre.
The affinity theatre companies of queer, black, Latinx, and female artists are responsible for some of our most important work. (Even this season s/o @HalfStraddle)
Anyway this is a rant but I think that I just want us all to think deeply abt how what we can do bc the man wont

And it doesn’t have to be through money, things that have been so important to me recently:
@Lynnbrooklyn’s mentorship to young playwrights.
@LalaTellsAStory giving grants to new writers.
@Jjbioh & BJJ hosting every black playwright at the Amory for dinner.
So much more.

Anyway:
