I keep thinking abt how JK Rowling invoked both lesbians & the fictive "men sneaking into bathrooms" to justify her transphobic rant. She claims it's abt safety. But I'm a cis black butch lez & the times I felt most unsafe in bathrooms were when white women assumed I was a man
The fact of the matter is the encouragement to assume the gender of who enters bathrooms directly affects the safety of trans women, especially butch trans women, as well as butch cis women--and in both cases butches of color are being placed in more harm by transphobia
Rowling acts as though there is no violence that occurs in the demand to protect "women's" bathrooms from the specter of "men". Yet so many of these anxious women can't even recognize cis women by sight. Why would we trust their judgement?
At root, the idea that anxious white women know and should be the arbiters of people's genders and their safety just highlights their investment in a dominating imposition of order which is violently maintained
don't want to detract from the specific harm that attends trans life, but just wanted to add that Rowling's claims actually increases the unsafety of many cis woc too so her argument also fails miserably on the "women's safety" count unless white feminine women are the norm
