Recently, Governor @dougducey called for a “public process” to decide the fate of the confederate monument at Arizona’s Capitol. Here’s my best attempt at piecing together some of the history. 1/ https://twitter.com/elviadiaz1/status/1272898308483284992

Governor Fannin announced the monument on January 8th, 1961. It was part of Arizona’s Civil War Centennial commemoration. [pic] 2/
About a year prior, Gov. Fannin had created the Arizona Civil War Centennial Commission, and stacked it with members of organizations like the Sons of Confederate Veterans. [2 pics] 4/
Arizona only had one monument at the Capitol at that time, a monument of Frank Luke, a local war hero from WWI (and the namesake of Luke AFB in AZ). The legislature appropriated $10K for its construction. [pic] 5/
Wesley Bolin Plaza didn’t exist at the time, and if you’re familiar with the AZ Capitol, the background here shows you where they put the confederate monument. This one privately funded by UDC. 6/
As an aside, the older woman in this photo, Mrs. R.E.L. Canion, had apparently been involved with the United Daughters of the Confederacy for some time. 7/
In 1939, she hosted then-Governor Jones at a UDC gathering at her home, where they sang songs like “That’s why Darkies are Born.” I won’t post the lyrics here. [pic] 8/
Back in 2017, @dougducey’s office said that the Governmental Mall Commission could relocate monuments, but had “no answer” on how the public could weigh in. [pic] 9/
But in 2018, the legislature gave that sole authority to ADOA, an agency overseen by @dougducey [pic] 10/
And now that @dougducey has the authority to remove this monument, he is claiming to want a public process. Like @elviadiaz1 said: just move the damn confederate monument, @dougducey. 11/11
