I am absolutely fascinated by the diversity-industrial complex, which is booming even in These Uncertain Times https://twitter.com/tsn_pr/status/1272959565215272961
Way in 1988, which is practically the dark ages and certainly not 20 years after the Civil Rights Era or anything, TSN hired @bodybreak & then rescinded the offer because “they already had a Black reporter and didn’t want 2”. And this would have been avoided with...a task force?
Are you actually stupid enough to need a team of professionals to tell you that it’s okay to have more than one Black person on your team, or do you think your audience is, or are you just trying to avoid liability, or is there an Option D?
These “we have taken it upon ourselves to pay people a lot of money to teach us to treat those weirdo ethnic people with a modicum of dignity” statements always have the exact opposite effect on me as intended
A better apology, which I will provide for free, would have been “wow, we sure fucked up. Frankly, we’re shocked at how badly we fucked up, because that kind of fuckup is so staggeringly obvious that we can’t even imagine repeating it today.”
I would looooove to see someone do a study comparing the diversity in STEM-based industries (philistines, would benefit from humanities education) to those in cultural institutions (far more enlightened, seemingly the main consumers of Top Tips For Interacting With The Other)
Not saying we nerdy philistines are perfect by any stretch but I sure don’t see any indication we’re *worse* (I type, having spent a morning in meetings sharing ideas with and taking direction from people of all different racial backgrounds, some even in positions of authority)
