Thank you to @ASEE_DC @ASEEDiversity for your exemplary leadership and dialogue on anti-racism in engineering education. Thanks to Dr. Bev Watford for your leadership. @deucevt
From Dr. James Moore: racism is a #publichealth issue. @ASEE_DC
On dismantling racism in education, Dr. Chris Carr @GoodCarrma shared: we must be deliberative, forward-thinking, and transformative. @ASEE_DC
Dr. Yvette Pearson @dryepearson challenged engineering educators to make equity and inclusion central to how we teach and train engineers. @ASEE_DC
From Dr. Margaret Schultz @marschultz : white teachers need to take a deep look inside themselves. We need to recognize Black students as brilliant. And if we don’t, we should not be standing in front of them.
Also from Dr. Schultz: our students are angry. They are ready to organize and mobilize in the fight against racism. We need to listen to their voices. @ASEE_DC
From Dr. Carr @GoodCarrma : racism thrives when we are afraid to buck the status quo. The time for treading the water is over. We’ve got to take the battles on in engineering education.
From Dr. Moore @DrJLMooreIII : it takes tenacity and courage to create the kind of communities we want to live in.
Racism is a complex issue that requires many solutions. But none of these solutions involve fixing our students. Our students are perfect and brilliant. We need to fix our systems. Thank you so much for this truth, @marschultz @ASEE_DC
Closing thoughts from @GoodCarrma : engineering has long been used to disenfranchise or empower communities. That’s the power here in engineering education.
