The Safe Policing for Safe Communities EO issued by #45 only brushes the surface of what is needed to begin reforming policing in the US. Examining alternatives to arrest, removing responsibility for addressing homelessness and mental health issues from police is where it begins.
The EO is misfocused on certification and credentialing, a pretext for not getting much of anything done. It is a process tied to monies given by the AG and is discretionary. This process has been tried by departments in the past and hasn’t stopped the taking of Black lives.
@realDonaldTrump’s EO still doesn’t get it. He takes up space discussing the safety of police and improving “use of force policies.” The problem is not with how the police are treated—they are fine. It is also not about improving “use of force” policies but dismantling them.
The thing Donald Trump needed to address most in his EO on policing and communities was the one thing he completely ignored—the issue of race. No real reform and healing can take place without an acknowledgement that race is at the core of the nation’s painful and ugly history.
