Today is the 125th Punyatithi of Gopal Ganesh Agarkar.

Agarkar was a social reformer, an educationist, an author.

A close associate of Lokmanya Tilak, since their college days in Pune, he was also a co-founder of the Deccan Education Society (parent of Fergusson College).
Agarkar was the first editor of 'Kesari', (that was founded by Lokmanya Tilak in 1880). Ideological differences with Tilak caused him later to leave: they disagreed regarding the primacy of political reform versus social reform.

Agarkar was the second Principal of the Fergusson College in Pune, and served that post from 1892 until his death in 1895.

Agarkar died at a young age of 39 (he was suffering from severe Asthma).
