As ever, the thing I find most amazing about Wales’ performances in (most games at) Euro 2016 is the freedom. It was so nerveless. Ramsey was trying flicks in every game. Allen just dropped a shoulder. Davies dribbled through the centre of midfields. Hal’s turn. No sense of fear.
Even James Chester was selling dummies to beat a man!
I mean, what a fucking goal that is.
That first goal against Russia actually encapsulates our tournament. Chester wins the ball (after Taylor lost it...); Allen turns beautifully first time and lays a divine through ball; and Ramsey times his run perfectly and finished coolly. Our three best players at Euro 2016.
Non-Wales fans always roll their eyes when I say this, but I strongly believe that Bale was maybe our sixth-best player at Euro 2016, and definitely fifth. Allen, Ramsey, Chester and Davies were all superb. Bale’s competing with Ledley, Robson-Kanu and Gunter for the No.5 spot.
*no higher than fifth, that should say
The commentator talked dumbfounded about how that was Taylor’s first goal for Wales. It was his first goal in any competitive match since the 2009/10 season! He hasn’t scored another goal in the past decade! No wonder he needed two stabs at this one.
‘kinell, we’re even better than I remember. (No need for Savage to gleefully tell a Russian fan, “You’re getting battered“, mind)
Two surprising BBC things in that Wales-Russia half: Savage doing decent tactical punditry, dialling down the banter, and the commentator not mentioning England - playing at the same time - even once. There were references to Wales being top, but the focus was fully on this match
Even more great chances than I remember. We really could have scored six.
Two men in the Russia box here, following a counter-attack launched by the latter: CF Vokes and RCB Chester. Obviously.
Even without the goal, this must have been Taylor’s best performance in à Wales shirt
Since you didn't ask: that passage of olés featured 40 passes, all 11 Wales players touching the ball, and a solid minute and 34 seconds of Wales possession.
I do remember that excellent Dzyuba chance. It's why I remember this game as deserving to be roughly 4-1 – wrongly as it turns out. We should've scored several more; 6-1 would've been a fairer scoreline.
