A thread on Kurosaki Ichigo's character development
Ichigo starts off as a teenager who simply wants to protect his friends and family, and is afraid of taking on the burden to protect strangers. By the end of the series he's able to save random people, like its no big deal. How did this come to be? Let's go through the journey.

Additionally, this thread will also explore how Ichigo overcame his self-confidence issues, and how he overcame losing hope during times of despair.
After gaining Soul Reaper powers, Ichigo felt very strong and became cocky. He was first humbled by his loss to Byakuya. This made him re-consider his strength, and to cherish it & put it to better use in the future.

The next arc that developed Ichigo was coming to terms with his hollow power. He had many internal battles trying to reign it in and make it his own. He fought Grimmjow without confidence and in a state of despair. Orihime became the one who helped him overcome this affair.

Next came the Ulquiorra fight where Ichigo had to face the gruesome reality that he was not strong enough to protect his friends. The hollow inside him that he feared would take over, indeed took over.
To wrap up the hollow arc, Ichigo came up against Gin and Aizen. He learned from his experience and realized he needed to be stronger in order to suppress his inner hollow.

Especially after the Dangai training, he became stronger than Aizen without using his hollow.
Moving onto the Fullbring arc. It was a story where Ichigo had to deal with many emotionally impactful scenarios, which he came out of more matured.

It began with him having lost his powers, and feeling that he couldn't protect his loved ones anymore.
This entices him to achieve fullbring, a new power that will allow him to become strong again.

However Tsukishima & Ginjo have other ideas for him.....

They psychologically torture him by turning his friends and family against him. To cap it off, they steal his powers. This puts Ichigo in a terrible state of anguish, and we see him cry like never before.
However at this point, he has gained the respect of the entirety of the Soul Society's captains, and they offer him a lifeline to get his powers back.

With his powers back, he is immediately more grateful and appreciative of them. You never know what you have until its gone.
Moving onto the Thousand Year Blood War, Ichigo Kurosaki's once adversaries come together to help him, captivated by his ability to overcome despair, time and time again.
The first one to recognize him is Kuchiki Byakuya, a prideful man who is reluctant to rely on someone, let alone recognize their strength.
The next one to recognize him are Ginjo and Tsukishima, even though they were once bitter enemies.
Finally, Abarai Renji. He was captivated by Kurosaki's ability to push forward in life, and decided to be the one to help him if he struggles.

Even Aizen respected his growth and maturity. Ichigo started off rash at the start, but at the end, he is shown to be analytical in battle.
It's also important to note that Ichigo has mastered his inner hollow at this point. His emotional maturity provided by his past experiences has helped him reach this stage of balance.

Finally, the big boss. Ywach touts himself as despair itself. This makes it perfect sybolism for Ichigo to face him. As he's the constant enemy he's had throughout the series: despair.

EVEN THOUGH THAT HAPPENED. Ichigo still wins. Why?

He went from being afraid to protect strangers, and is now the protector of EVERYONE.

He was constantly despairing, and now he is the one who will overcome despair itself.
