White peoples’ desire to pretend to be Indigenous is honestly pathological. I can’t help but see it as stemming from a deep lack of connection to community and spirituality that they feel the need to latch onto someone else’s, mixed with the audacity to feel entitled to it
It’s such a deeply weird phenomenon, the result of that specific mix of cultural barrenness and entitlement is.... interesting to say the least. You’d have to be an extremely lost person to feel your best possible option is to base your whole identity off a lie. Shit is wack 🤷
It’s also a uniquely white type of selfishness. Your own personal desire to have a connection to something that isn’t yours, held over and above the people and community you are lying to, whose trust you’re shattering and whose ability to feel safe and secure you’re destroying.
Indigenous peoples have always tended toward being kind, open, giving, offering the benefit of the doubt. And white people come along and take advantage of that, and poison our communities to sharing and welcoming, not only outsiders but our own people. It’s sick.
Fuck pretendians.
(A note to white people and non-Indigenous POC: it is never your place to police who is or isn’t Indigenous so please refrain from offering input and simply follow our lead on these conversations.)
