Some medieval state propaganda this #NumisChat - Edward III sailing the ship of state, self-proclaimed King of England and France and Lord of Ireland. 1/

The ship may have had additional meaning at the time of issue: this coin, a gold noble, was first struck in 1344, just four years after the significant naval victory at Sluys during the Hundred Years' War. #NumisChat 2/
The English noble circulated widely as an international currency of the North Sea world during the late 14th and early 15th centuries - this specimen was one of nearly 100 found on a wrecked Hanseatic cog off Vejby Strand in Denmark. #NumisChat 3/
Its international circulation was in some respects a political coup for the English Crown: it meant that messages of Royal power and authority would now spread hand to hand, purse to purse, all across the region. #NumisChat 4/
...Although not without contestation. But that's a topic for next week! #NumisChat
