FINALLY got my hands on a copy!

I’m so excited to have contributed to this book.

If I had read this book 6 yrs ago, I would have been shocked with the ideas it contains.

It would have really challenged my thinking on race, patriotism, activism & curriculum/pedagogy. Why?

1/
I hadn’t really given these ideas much thought. Patriotism in schools? I didn’t really see how or why it’s so important for a pupil’s sense of belonging. But seeing our pupils sing ‘I Vow to Thee’ at a classical music concert trip, waving their 🇬🇧 flags proved me wrong. 2/
When I saw just how much #Michaela pupils get out of every minute of every lesson when I visited, I realised just how valuable a sense of urgency is when it comes to learning. Our results day was the culmination of extraordinary self-discipline by both teachers & pupils 3/
Self-discipline can only come about when individuals choose to sacrifice expedient choices for difficult ones. How can schools cultivate a culture where this is normal and desirable? Rejecting a victimhood narrative is key 4/
Replacing an excuse-culture with one of personal responsibility is hard. It seems harsh at times. But when one wears a long-term lens, the significant increase in happiness that comes with mastering self-discipline, one sees the power of such a culture 5/
And with this paradigm shift, one sees the world with a completely different slant. Abandoning school to protest green issues; lowering standards for BAME pupils to compensate for hardships; replacing Mozart with Stormzy for engagement - all suddenly seem counter-productive 6/
These issues are all addressed in this book, along with a dissection of the lenses that allow this thinking: personal responsibility, belief in embracing authority & understanding duty.

I hope this book opens up a lot of dialogue! 7/
