Read my thread ⬇️regarding the added emotional labour carried out by Black, Indigenous and other racialized people, including immigrants, and the need for those seeking to support our communities to become more informed and active allies.
Indigenous, Black, and other racialized peoples cannot be expected to continually do the emotional labour of educating the wider public on the impact of systemic racism.
This work is important, but it is also overwhelming and exhausting, especially when we are asked to share our personal and painful lived experiences over and over again.
My point is that it's not on us to inform or comfort you (the collective you). It is your responsibility to identify your privilege and the benefits you have accrued at the expense of others. Do the work!
There are plenty of resources available that will teach you about the societal systems, structures and institutions that perpetuate racism and their impact on racialized communities both in Canada and abroad.
Racialized people in Canada have been fighting for justice, recognition and healing for decades and even centuries. The current struggles are not new.
Once you have taken the time to learn and grow, you will be able to become a better ally and share your knowledge with others (family, friends, coworkers).
The transformative change that is desperately needed will come about if we all take individual and collective steps to challenge and change racist attitudes and behaviours (including those done in subtle and sometimes invisible ways).
& We commit to work to transform the systems, structures and institutions that perpetuate racism, such as the child welfare and criminal justice system.
Note: I, too, need to do the work. Because while I have witnessed and experienced anti-Indigenous racism and violence, I have not walked in the shoes of all racialized people. Allyship is a continuous journey of learning, understanding and action. We all need to do the work.
