My peeps who know @lecrae, send that brother a copy of #IBringtheVoices and tell him not to talk to another white evangelical about race until he reads it.
I'm listening to the entire convo now and the whole thing is a setup from the beginning.
That part where Giglio says the difficulty White people have w/ understanding racism is that they can never experience it directly. That's such a standard White copout. Why do you need to experience injustice to know that it exists and that it's wrong?!
Giglio had a good moment where he recognized the historical context of racism. But then, "I think it was Dr. King or some other person recently who said..." So you just blatantly out here attributing random statements to Dr. King?
Truett Cathy said "It's shameful how we've let things get so out of whack." About systemic racism, y'all. A White man born and raised in the South said that like slavery & Jim Crow just happened accidentally.
This whole #whiteblessing v #whiteprivilege is about White people controlling the dialogue about racism so that their feelings don't get hurt. And what do we call it when the ground rules prioritize the feelings of White people? White supremacy.
Oh, and Dan Cathy (did I call him Truett before) is offering an apologetics for police. This is such peak white evangelicalism.
Atonement theology and predestination are the theological sunken place. An evil system is not divinely ordained. Point blank period.
Dan Cathy tried to offer a hug as a sign of a contrite heart and @lecrae was like, "How about some stock in Chick-Fil-A?!"
Hey @dancathy - what was it about that 19yo African American man that made you think he didn't look like someone familiar with scripture and the "spiritual term" of repentance?
And in true White evangelical fashion, they ended on the language of relationship, having God in your heart, and doing works of charity.
So here's the good thing that @louiegiglio @dancathy & @lecrae tried to do: they tried to say something instead of being silent. What they did wrong was not learning more about racism before trying to say something on a huge platform.
They should have used their platform to amplify the voices of Black Christian leaders and scholars who have been more knowledge & experience.
