For ANYONE upset with Minnesota Freedom Fund, please listen to us black folks who live in MN. MFF could not possibly, legally give out millions of dollars within two weeks. ITS NOT POSSIBLE. Please be patient. https://twitter.com/tanahargest/status/1272872643872485378
I can’t keep track of everything comment and retweet on this. Most nonprofits do not receive this type of windfall, let alone during the middle of a global pandemic and major unrest in their community. The Twin Cities has been through hell and back the past 3 weeks. I cannot
stress that enough. Under normal circumstances, when donors/funders (individual, philanthropic or government) give money, they expect a report every 6 or 12 months. @MNFreedomFund is a largely volunteer led org. To demand an accounting of every dollar within weeks is impossible.
If you donate to a nonprofit as an individual, it is very rare for you to receive a detailed list of how your money was used. Especially if your gift is relatively small compared to the fundraising total/org’s annual budget.

I don’t work for MFF and don’t know anyone who works
there. But I cannot imagine being in their position. They are under more scrutiny than they could have ever imagined a month ago. They were not prepared for this. They didn’t seek out attention or millions in donations. Give them patience and time to process their new reality.
If they cannot account for the funds in the next 6 months, that would be a problem. All nonprofits should be scrutinized at some point, but give them time to do the work first. There have not been enough bail set in the past 2 weeks to spend all of the money.
Lastly, MFF cannot legally transfer money to another org or use it for another purpose if donors intended their funds to be used for bail. It’s clear MFF needs to scale up their capacity, but they likely are limited in what they can do with these funds. https://www.asaecenter.org/resources/articles/an_plus/2018/june/why-organizations-must-honor-donor-intent
