City Council was supposed to discuss today the renewal of DPD's facial recognition contract w Dataworks today. It was removed from the schedule last min. @MsMarySheffield just asked council/the admin why this happened.
City Council Liaison just explained that the discussion around the Dataworks contract was pulled bc DPD still needed to do more "community outreach." In '17 the city entered into a 3-yr, $1,045,843, contract with SC-based DataWorks Plus.
More on that initial contract/concerns Detroiters expressed last summer around the use of facial recognition software https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2019/06/27/detroiters-concerned-over-facial-recognition-technology/1567113001/
Actual contract w Dataworks embedded into this article (for some reason I can't figure out how to just share that link): https://www.freep.com/story/news/local/michigan/detroit/2019/07/16/duggan-war-of-words-surveillance-tech/1701604001/
Some ppl during public comment are asking when exactly the three-year DataWorks (facial recognition) contract expires. According to the contract, it was effective upon council's approval (which occurred on 7/25/17) and terminates "3 years after said approval"
