DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOLIDARITY + CHARITY [thread]

The surge in support for those living in #DirectProvision is welcome & important. However, we are aware that some fundraisers have had no input from people in DP, and have assumed their needs.

Based on our own learning (RAMSI started with a donation drive) we would like to talk about why it’s important that any fundraising/collection efforts have input & participation from people in DP.

2/12
The intentions behind these fundraisers & donation drives are often good, however, excluding those living in #DirectProvision from a conversation about their needs benefits no one.

3/12
We understand the inclination to collect donations of toiletries & cleaning products - indeed, it can be difficult to purchase these things on €38 a week. But these donations may remove peoples’ agency to choose things they need for themselves.

4/12
Despite our best intentions to help, the needs of asylum seekers might differ from what we expect. They vary depending on several factors and they often extend beyond basic necessities.

For example, tackling the ‘digital divide’ [ie access to WiFi, laptops/tablets]

5/12
It is also important to consider the power imbalance inherent in donating goods/service provision rather than simply trusting people with money.

Some people might not feel comfortable asking for certain items or stating their needs directly.

6/12
If you want to give money, direct financial transfers or gift cards to individuals or families in DP is a good approach, as is making financial transfers to affected-led groups like @masi or Cooking for Freedom.

7/12
Better still is long-term relationship-building with people living in DP, listening to their needs and assisting in fundraising for & with them, which creates participation, agency, & more equitable power relations.

8/12
Moreover, donations and drop-offs are ultimately meaningless without an #endDP approach and simply maintain the system.

Supporting and amplifying asylum seekers’ demands to end DP is an essential part of this work.

9/12
The charity model often reinforces existing power dynamics. It will not #endDP and institutional racism.

Solidarity, mutual aid and community building, on the other hand, are important steps in that direction.

Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano once said: “I don't believe in charity. I believe in solidarity. Charity is so vertical. It goes from the top to the bottom. Solidarity is horizontal. It respects the other person. I have a lot to learn from other people.”

We ask that if you see a fundraiser/collection for #DirectProvision ask the organiser:

Have you consulted with any DP residents before starting this initiative?

Who are you working with?

How have you identified these needs as being the most pressing?
