Ideas that I believe are incredibly important when discussing the return of schools:
1. Teacher burnout is already high. Throwing a ton of PD when we’ve cut raises, won’t pay them for PD, & added furlough clauses won’t help burnout.
2. Design of online classes is one of the most important parts on online learning. We shouldn’t be just be throwing out a ton of tools, but really spending time talking about the design of the online classroom
3. When students return to school after a tragic event such as Katrina, the research shows that schools who focused on spiral review rather than remediation classes were more successful
4. Equity and accountability will be huge issues. But continually feedback helps students more than grades and is overall a better teaching practice
5. This is the time to be creatively thinking & having important conversations about the roles of community. We have the opportunity to work on a broken system. It will be new & maybe uncomfortable but I don’t believe it will be the worst thing that’s ever happened.
6, And finally fully funding schools and supporting education is one of the most important things we can do.
