Fox News wants its audience in a state of abject terror about civil unrest. But reality isn't scary enough. So here are nine ways the network -- "news" and "opinion" side alike -- pushed disinformation to amp up the fear. https://www.mediamatters.org/fox-news/nine-ways-fox-has-pushed-disinformation-about-civil-unrest-terrify-its-audience
1. Fox tried to manufacture evidence-free antifa panic about violence related to protests, arguing that it was engaging in “wanton acts of violence are part of a coordinated effort to eventually overthrow the United States government.” This has not panned out at all.
2. Top “news”-side anchor Bret Baier was among the Fox personalities pushing a hoax about antifa placing “pallets of bricks” near protests.
3. Fox’s website spread a thinly-sourced paranoid conspiracy theory about antifa invading suburbia and imminent arrests of its leaders. Two weeks later, this has not happened.
4. The network's antifa-focused “investigative journalist” keeps falling for obvious online hoaxes about it, which everyone involved should be embarrassed by.
5. After unrest subsided, Fox keeps playing old “riot porn” B-roll. https://twitter.com/MattGertz/status/1272855695952678914
6. Fox illustrated coverage of Seattle protests and the CHAZ with doctored, inaccurate images, then lied about it, then apologized. (Photo below is from MInneapolis)
7. Fox kept pushing allegations that demonstrators were extorting CHAZ businesses, even after police repudiated it.
8. Fox “news” anchor Matha MacCallum got fooled by a Monty Python joke.
9. Fox drastically overstated the size of the CHAZ, claiming that it had consumed half the city.
Some of these are obvious hackery, and some are credulous fools falling for obvious online hoaxes, but they all go in the same direction, toward convincing the audience that their lives are in danger.
