ppl who never heard of the minnesota freedom fund before this are gonna end up killing one of the most directly impactful orgs in the twin cities’ streets & jails because they think 2 weeks is too long to wait for a plan of how they’ll spend 300x what they usually spend in a year
someone in my mentions brought up this important point, too: by law, non-profits are bound to spend money that’s donated to them on the things people say it’s for. i didn’t look at their recent donation form, but i believe it said it was explicitly for bail
that means that if there’s less than $35 million in bail that needs to be funded (already very clearly the case) the org may not be able to even do anything with the money without direct correspondence with donors. it wasn’t marked for general operations or overhead.
so the obvious answer - distribute the money to other orgs that have less - besides something that would take a long time for a much bigger organization - may not even be legal.
