Can we please dial down the rhetoric?

'Tsunami of mental illness'
'lifelong problems'

This narrative pathologizes young people's understandable reactions to abnormal experiences, but also fails to take into account the likely slow emergence of needs we will see...
I'm not saying that people won't be affected. We know many will. But research shows that not all needs will emerge at the same time, not everyone will be affected in the same way, not everyone will understand what's happenned or perceive it to be traumatic...
By placing the source of the problem within pathology, we risk placing additional and needless barriers between adults who want to help and children experiencing emotional distress. We need as many adults as we can to help us mitigate and buffer the impact of this time...
Blanket statements, headlines & lack of nuance arent helpful to parents, educators & many other professionals, trying to mitigate the impact.

Unless we challenge it, we risk our young people believing that the problem lies within them.
