WHY USING JAPANESE NAMES (ONLINE) IS HARMFUL TO OUR CULTURE

☆ i am not up for debate. this is my two cents as a japanese person

1. you’re using our culture as a trend. i understand if it’s from a kin standpoint but japanese names have a lot to do with respect and ancestry. instead of using the full japanese name, please shorten it to make it a bit more americanized.

1B. ex: kazuichi ↠ kaz
tazuna ↠ taz
saiki ↠ sai
shuichi ↠ shu
katsuki ↠ kat

these are just some examples, and you’re mature enough to know what to shorten it to.

2. you, a non-asian person, have never dealt with getting bullied, harassed, and fetishized like an asian person does. if you have a very clear asian name in school, i can’t tell you how much you’re gonna get bullied. you’ve never been called ching chong in your life, right?

2B. (TW: wars, a bit graphic, genocide) it’s funny how you want our names now, but you were the ones to tied us to train tracks during WWII and ran over our heads with trains. you put us through horrible things and then steal our culture. (TW OVER)

3. japanese names hold a LOT of respect and ancestry. they link back to samurai, fighting, and a system with emperors.

3B. for example:

chiyo : “thousand generations”
daichi : “great, big, earth, land”
kiyoko : “holy child”
masaru : “victory or excellence”
shun : “fast, talented”
hiroshi : “tolerant, generous”

3C. as you can see, the meanings mean a lot. a lot of them have to do with nature or fighting in which many japanese people take pride in their ancestors fighting. by stealing these names when your ancestors didn’t go through what ours did, you are taking the meaning away.
