PVR'd tonight's @TheAgenda, watching now...
When @spaikin asked why @PeelSchools is "the biggest problem" & Dr. Carl James brings attention to boards that fly under the radar, namely Catholic ones, tho... I went to Catholic school, the Doc is on the money.
As @PLloydHenry said, "systemic #ABR is endemic in all public institutions and education is no different."

I hope what is happening in our school community will inspire @DPCDSBSchools to identify and address the problems in their system...

Parents, hold them accountable.
Dr. Carl James goes on to indicate that systemic racism isn't unique to @PeelSchools.

I've heard people comment on how large the problem is saying it feels "too big" for us to solve - We must start where WE are & recognize how issues stem from our buildings...
If there aren't many Black students in grad programs, we must recognize the link to the streaming that takes place in our schools - We're not allowing them the pathways to get there.
Side note: I didn't care for the tone @spaikin used after asking Nerissa Hutchinson, parent, whether her daughter has Black teachers and responds saying that she does...

"Presumably that makes a difference."

OF COURSE IT DOES.
@PLloydHenry speaking re: the need for responsive curriculum - Every time, this past year, that the students in our BSA were taught something connected to Black History, they told me about it, and their surprise and excitement screams how important it is.
Dr. Carl James: "Teaching has to do with relationships."

As educators, we have to reflect on the relationships we have with our Black students - students see though us, they know who's authentically interested in supporting them (that should be all of us).
@radicalprodigal said so many important things tonight...

"Allyship is where privilege meets oppression in a journey of change."

"Ally is NOT taking over. An ally means to walk beside... to amplify voice that is unheard or otherwise muted, it is to do the messiness of life."
"Allyship is messy, injustice is messy... If we think of centuries of injustice and the messiness of that injustice, then allyship will necessarily be messy, but our desire for change must be greater than our fear of getting messy."
"We have to all see ourselves as part of the solution... Racism isn't a Black peoples problem, [it] is a world problem... We cannot change our society... our future without both groups..."

*Pretty sure I sent an email to a few colleagues with that message a few months ago...
"To be colourblind isn't progressive, it is in fact racist... When you tell me you don't see me colour, you're just erasing a huge piece of my identity... When you remain silent in the face of injustice... [you give] permission for that injustice to take place & to continue."
"What do we need from our white humanity? ... We need you to listen, but we also need you to use your privilege of whiteness... You didn't earn whiteness, you were born into it and it allows you not to see certain realities."
"What allyship means is being aware of my own location of privilege and then constantly reflecting and learning about how do I use the privilege I have to make a better world for those who do not have the privilege that I have."
"White privilege is not the same as economic privilege... They are two very different things..."
"We can't change in our comfort, we won't change when we're comfortable."
