Black men: we absolutely cannot get defensive when Black women say that we need to do better. We have to listen and reflect. We have to acknowledge that their safety is more important than our feelings. We have to understand that we have the power to be better and do better.
Get out your feelings and observe what’s going on. Black women have every right to be angry and loud. Being Black is wild by itself, but Black women can’t feel safe in spaces that are *literally* supposed to be created for Black liberation. That should piss us all off.
Thinking that you're “one of the good ones” is an easy way to avoid true reflection and introspection. We have to be ready to fight for ALL Black women, and that fight HAS to include checking men in our own circles whose actions show that they don’t value ALL BLACK LIVES.
And public statements are cool and all. Ideally, they inspire other people to think about the issue in a different light. But real life action is what’s necessary. I don’t pretend to know everything that I should be doing, but I’m definitely trying. I hope you are too.
