I've watched the One Piece anime countless times already, but with the recent release on Netflix, I felt spirited to go through the early episodes once again, and share some thoughts and observations I've made throughout all these years.
Most fans are well aware that the anime took liberties early on in the series. The first being that Episode 1 jumps right to adapting Chapter 2.

I like it a lot. It sets a pretty easy to understand tone of the One Piece world: Just another day in the great age of piracy.
The first Straw Hat Pirate to make an appearance in the series is actually Nami. Toei made the choice to introduce her early as a mysterious lady thief. I think it's brilliant, and really builds up the anticipation to her proper introduction to the story.
Our main character introduces himself by bursting out of a barrel. Enough said.
Just a nifty little touch as we transition from Coby's backstory to the present.
Kazuya Hisada's animaiton of Luffy vs. The Alvida pirates really captures the tone of the series. It's still.... violently punching dudes in the face, but there's this adventurous charm to it.
What also has a lot of charm: Luffy's introduction to his rubber abilities. This is so goofy. A perfect demonstration of the kind of man/fighter Luffy is.

We're a long way from Luffy vs. Katakuri....
The anticipation and the follow through of Luffy's attack on Alvida. I love these poses, as well as the snap of Luffy's arm returning to him.
Our stinger for the end of the episode is our first glimpse of Roronoa Zoro, with a guitar riff that sounds like it was plucked from Trigun. It feels out of character with the rest of the score, but it demonstrates the kind of hard ass our gleeful protagonist wants to align with.
Zoro enters the picture in Episode 2, and he's the King of the Camera Pans.
I enjoy the over the top, comical animation of Helmeppo stomping out a riceball.
The story behind Zoro's incarceration is expanded upon, and in my opinion improved in the anime. Helmeppo lets his pet wolf run rampant on Rika's family restaurant. Zoro just happens to be there and it turns Spaghetti Western when the commotion interrupts Zoro's drink at the bar.
When an action is staged flat, it's usually for comedic purposes. Helmeppo is a chump, and stands no chance of taking on Zoro in a fight.
Some great shots that make a conversation between 2 characters much more visually appealing, and the framing and compositions tell you so much about these characters without the context.
Another shot I really like. The sword must be put down in order to walk out that door and attain freedom. These dramatic watercolor shots are also a thing in this series. They're great.
In case you were wondering if they were skimping out on Zoro's backstory, they're saving it for one of the best episodes of the entire series.
Don't forget Luffy isn't the hope of the universe, ally to good, nightmare to you. He's still a pirate, and doesn't play by the rules. Also this is just really funny.
Episode 3 features some brief lore about the Devil Fruits. The only 2 with unique designs in this visual are Luffy and Buggy's. Only in recent issues of the One Piece Magazine are we finally seeing designs for other fruits we've known about for years.
Zoro's Three Sword Style rides this fine line of being incredibly badass and goofy. You wonder how the hell a guy can talk with a sword in his mouth.

The Japanese ignores it and Zoro is clearly audible, but I like that the dub makes it sound like he's got a sword in there.
This gives me anxiety.
The stages of grief:

• Shock
• Disbelief
• Humor
• Acceptance
I can't see this shot and not think of the 4Kids rap. Every YouTube video has this as the thumbnail.
I can't see THIS shot, and not hear Peter Cullen's narration over it.

I actually tried to pay homage to this pose in an episode of Hot Streets "Creamy Zeus," but was asked to change it to a more straight on/mug shot pose.
I used to think these were the same character, and I think the English Dub did as well.
Interesting choice of a shot to not depict Luffy's beatdown on Coby, but to show their silhouettes reflected in a decorative plate in the restaurant. Less is more.
