. @AFCNewYork is calling on the state Education Department to ensure that students aging out of school this month can return to high school next school year. https://subscriber.politicopro.com/states/new-york/albany/story/2020/06/15/advocates-push-state-to-accommodate-students-aging-out-of-school-1292978
About 3,700 students in the state will age out of school this year. Many will graduate this month but those who couldn't complete their coursework due to challenges with pandemic and online learning will lose their chance to earn a diploma (between 1,000 and 2,500 students).
About 74 percent of students aging out are Black or Latino even as they make up less than 45 percent of total high school population in the state, and 47 percent have disabilities. And one in three students aging out is learning English as a new language.
