It's a huge achievement to have an end to direct provision included in the draft Programme for Government.
We owe an enormous debt to the residents & former residents of direct provision for speaking out & sharing their stories to make this happen. https://www.rte.ie/news/politics/2020/0614/1147405-programme-for-government/
These commitments have the power to make extraordinary changes to the lived experience of asylum seekers in Ireland.
- Direct Provision system abolished
- speeding up of the time for decisions
- more humane housing provision for families
- a change away from the private sector
The work of ending direct provision is far from over however. Change won't come overnight & there's a lot of work to do to ensure that any new system respects the dignity and human rights of those seeking asylum here.
