Between the cities of Cardiff and Newport lies a vast network of ancient, secretive waterways, known as "The Gwent Levels"

For millennia, this landscape has been farmed, flooded and reclaimed from the sea.

It's a staggering 8,000 year-long engineering project.

Centuries of activity saw the construction of a massive sea wall, and a complex, gravity-fed system of waterways - sending water into an extensive series of drainage channels (or 'reens').

The water is then released into the Severn at intervals via tidal creeks (or 'pills').
The Levels are an internationally renowned archaeological site - having seen human habitation since the dawn of man.

They're also a Site of Special Scientific Interest… 5,856 hectares of water-locked fields provide an unparalleled habitat for a staggering array of wildlife!
The channels, reens and rivers are home to spectacular natural rarities - from the world’s smallest flowering vascular plant Wolffia arrhiza, to top predators.

It's the great silver water beetle only home in Wales, while the shrill carder bee is a recognised priority species.
