💥The Forgotten Warriors Ep : 6💥
Javagal Srinath.
Match: Ind vs SL, Johannesburg, 2003
Date: 10th March, 2003
Ind 292/6 in 50 Overs.
SL 2-0 in 1 over.
Atapattu and Jayasuriya had a mammoth task of setting up the chase on a flat deck and they both have good record against Ind.1️⃣
Jayasuriya's best avg against test playing teams was against India (40.07), Atapattu's (34.7) 3rd fav test playing team was India. India knew they had to get them out and in comes to bowl Srinath in the 2nd over. On the 3rd ball, Srinath bowls one short and wide to lure the.. 2️⃣
..in-form Atapattu. The batsmen falls into the trap as he hits it straight into the hands of @MohammadKaif at covers. 2 balls later, he bowls a perfect outswinger that goes across the leftie Mubarak, nick and gone! 3 balls 2 wkts! and the famous Indian team huddle.3️⃣
Experienced batsmen lured to hit a false stroke, youngster bamboozled by a peach. Srinath sets the tone of the match in his 1st over and goes on to pick 2 more that of Silva and Jayasuriya as Ind dismiss SL for 109 in an important super 6 match. Overall, Srinath took 16 wkts.. 4️⃣
..in the tournament. He was 9th among top wicket takers and 2nd among Indians bowlers (behind @ImZaheer 18 wkts) in that tournament and was generally bowling @/137kmph. This was after he had decided to retire in 2002, only for @SGanguly99 to request him to play the WC later.5️⃣
💥The early limelight💥
1969 born Srinath the bowler was first identified by Gundappa Vishwanath, Selector of the state team, in a club match. He soon made his FC debut against Hyd where he took a hattrick. He completed the season with 25 wkts and followed that with 20...6️⃣
... wickets in the next season. His pace and control with the older ball impressed the national selectors. He made his ODI debut against Pak on 18th Oct, 1991. He soon made his test debut in Aus on 29th Nov 1991. He played 11 ODIs and 2 tests in his debut year..8️⃣
.. and took 17 wickets at an avg of 35 considering both the formats.

💥 The Kapil Dev Factor💥
Srinath started his career as a 3rd seamer and played only when India went away from home. However, once Kapil Dev retired, he became India's leading seamer in both formats.⬇️9️⃣
💥Srinath - The Test Player💥
It was after March 19, 1994, the day when Kapil retired from test arena, that Srinath played his first game in India against WI. And post that series, He had a 3-fer and a 4-fer in his first series in the countries he played till 31st Dec 1994.🔟
💥2 Best bowling performances💥
13/132 vs Pak, 1999 in Kolkata, ATC.
The 1st test of Asian Test Championship had all the spice. Tensions at the borders, a stalemate to start with. The 1st test was played in Kolkata that Pak won despite Srinath's career best effort.. 1️⃣1️⃣
.. that included 8-fer in the 2nd. Thanks to Anwar's 188, Pak got through unscathed. Srinath, though, was no less than a beast. He made Pak dance to his tunes. In the 1st inns after dismissing Afridi and Ijas by bowling short of length, he lures Yousuf and Azhar.. 1️⃣2️⃣
..by one's that were fuller in length. Azhar's dismissals, however, was the best in the 1st inns. He followed the 5-fer with a 8-fer in the next innings that included wicket of Yousuf with a bouncer this time that showcased his shrewd cricketing brain. 1️⃣3️⃣
💥Hello, South Africa💥
Tom Eaton in one of his article, describes Srinath perfectly as a wolf in Sheep's clothing. SA wouldn't deny it. There were times when they seeked answers for India's spin duo and Srinath had just come out of syllabus. Don't you believe? See⬇️ 1️⃣4️⃣
💥6-21 vs SA in Ahmedabad💥
On a dry deck, batting in the 4th innings in India, what does an opposition expect? A spin feast right? SA thought the same until they encountered Srinath at his brutal pacey best. He foxed Hudson and Cullinan in the 1st over & within no time SA..1️⃣5️⃣
..were dismissed for 109 runs. He was equally devastating against them in SA. Till date, he avgs 4th best among non-SA bowlers who have bowled in SA⬇️. Best among Indians till date. A wolf, Indeed. Overall, he was poor in WI and Aus. ⬇️1️⃣6️⃣
💥Overall, Test career💥
He was laborious yet shrewd as we saw above. A lone wolf after Kapil retired. As shown⬇️, in this period, he was 4th in terms of workload when India's total balls bowled by seamers were not even in the top 5! Wicket tally wise 7th across the world⬇️.1️⃣7️⃣
One thing to note here was his avg in India. In 1990's, as shown above, Ind team's reliance on seamers was less. Yet he avgd mere 28, the best back then among Indian seamers. The duo Umesh-Shami in tandem and Bhuvi avg better than Srinath now. The lone wolf, Indeed! Pt-2.1️⃣8️⃣
💥Srinath - The ODI bowler💥
He savoured bowling in this format. He took 315 wickets that was 8th in the list seamers across the world, best in India. Though, He had just picked up 3 5-fers in his career, his impact avg when the team won was among the best.⬇️1️⃣9️⃣
He was handling the pace bowling burden in ODI's as well. He had better avgs in this format as batsmen found it harder to hit him off in this format. He avgd best in seaming conditions of NZ. ⬇️2️⃣0️⃣
💥The flag bearer in WC's💥
From 1991-2003, India had two WC masters. One was Sachin, the other was Srinath. Srinath was all alone till his last World cup where Zak came in as mentioned above. Overall, he is 6th in the list of wicket takers (seamers), joint best for India.⬇️2️⃣1️⃣
💥Career in a nutshell💥
After Kapil's retirement, Srinath workload had an increase of almost 200% till a career threatening injury in 1997 put him on spot. He had some hectic bowling in 1996, then in 1999 that led to injuries and a short career as shown below⬇️2️⃣2️⃣
To put more context, to what I spoke above, irrespective of d format, the ⬇️ motion graph shows 6 bowlers who bowled heavily in the same period. Srinath bowled double the balls bowled by the next best in 1996 and was 2nd best in 1999. Still not a big deal? Check next tweet ⬇️2️⃣3️⃣
The picture gets even gloomier when you see how less depended Ind were on pacers yet the amount of bowling Srinath did in the 9 years. BB were equal to 25% of balls bowled by Indian seamers. Mismanagement?⬇️2️⃣4️⃣
---
💥He was Fast Medium💥
As said above, his speed in the WC was..
.. what most seamers start their careers with. To bowl that after he had decided that to retire. Incredible! Also, As per records, his fastest ball was 157 kmph. Fast, Indeed! And to conclude, he was that guy who could walk on fire if the team demanded so!2️⃣5️⃣
He was geniune fast bowler who loved bowling. Therefore, Ganguly's request of asking Sri to come back from retirement made sense.
The respect today's bowlers get we should also thank Srinath for the revolution he began. This was my part. Hope you guys enjoyed the thread.2️⃣6️⃣
