Last year I started compiling instances of hanging deaths of Black people because it was clear from local calls that many deaths were suspicious and they weren't reported as such.

Most families and friend suspected lynchings.

Media mostly reported as suicides.

One thing I found in my research is journalism standards hold that the names of those that die by suicide not be released.

This hinders the ability to look into misclassified deaths and the ability to classify by race or other indicators.

It obscures data.
Let me find this spreadsheet and clean it up so people can read it.
I found the spreadsheet and cleaned it up a bit so y'all can read it.

I added a column for race since people were asking but I started by tracking Black people (which I'm only stating for you new ppl, welcome. it's all Black everything over here) and that remains my focus.
Also, again, this was just my own personal accounting because I noticed shit was getting weird and no one was stringing it together. It's obvs not comprehensive.

I'm willing to answer questions about my methodology or parameters for what I recorded.
I'm went back to 2015 as a starting point so deaths before then obvs aren't included. I'm open to adding relevant data to this sheet and I'll leave it public for others to reference.

Journos: if you reference my research I ask you credit me bc y'all love not to.
