Shin'ya Tsukamoto is a filmmaking genius.
TETSUO: THE IRON MAN is a film that I’ll never understand how it was ever made. No matter how much I study film, there’s no way I could make something like that. It’s brilliant!
TETSUO: BODY HAMMER, in my opinion, is even better than the 1st. It’s more controlled & is as inovatuve & creative. Plus, Shin’ya raises the bar on the strong presence of the female protagonist. I’m still hoping we get another TETSUO film where the main protagonist is female.
TOKYO FIST is easily one of the most innovative boxing films since RAGING BULL. The boxing scenes are shot like no other film I’ve ever seen. Shin’ya wanted to shoot the film in B&W, but didn’t want to be too on the nose w/RAGING BULL.
BULLET BALLET was inspired by Shin’ya’s own experience of being mugged outside a train station. Shin’ya filmed it in B&W to reflect the color of gun metal. It’s a dark look at depression & how Japan’s youth has rebelled from their parents generation & abuses that generation.
A SNAKE OF JUNE is the erotic film Shin’ya had been wanting to make for some time. Shin’ya explores sexual liberation w/a strong performance from Asuka Kurosawa. The monochrome cinematography w/blue tent reflects the Hydrangea flower that blooms in June and also brings rain.
VITAL (2004) is probably Shin’ya’s most calm film. Shin’ya was inspired to make this film based off a trip to Italy where he visited a dissection museum & him being a fan of Da Vanci. Shin’ya holds back on gore & goes for a more atomospheric horror. Beautifully shot & edited.
HAZE (2005) is a short film (that was extended from 25min to 50min) from Shin’ya. He was asked by a film festival to make a short using the digital video format & would make his first & last time using the format. Inspired by THE GREAT ESPACE, it’s pure claustrophobic horror.
This is a movie I think @joshstolberg would enjoy and could get some awesome SAW inspiration.
KOTOKO stylistically is very different from his other films, but Shin’ya’s motifs are still strongly present. Shot again on digital (as were all his films after HAZE), Shin’ya is able to capture beautiful still frames contrasting w/the semi docu style style in certain scenes.
