Turkish and Qatari Involvement in Africa
A thread.
When people think of the Turkish involvement in Libya they
miss a very significant objective of the current Turkish
government, which is expanding its influence over Africa,
specifically The sahel states, Somalia and Nigeria
The Perfect location of Al watiya base in Western Libya, makes it the perfect logistical lynchpin to exert such influence. It's proximity to the Sahel states, and it's capabilities once upgraded makes it a decent launch point.
In September 2017, massive shipments of Turkish made rifles were
uncovered by the Nigerian authorities in the port of Lagos. In one
week around 3000 Action pump rifles were discovered and 400+
rifles in two separate shipments.
It was the 4th time that year that such shipments were discovered
and this incident didn’t go unnoticed. After the incident an important Nigerian official was scheduled to meet the Turkish ambassador.
In may 2014 an article was released by Tanrıverdi, argued that
Turkey should consider effective measures to protect “Islamic
groups” in the Central African Republic, Mali and Nigeria from
this state terrorism.
It is interesting that a leaked recording of a conversation that took place in 2014, the same year that Tanrıverdi
revealed Turkey’s strategy towards some African countries.
For those who don’t know Tanrıverdi, He is the founder of the , Notorious Turkish Paramilitary group/Private military company SADAT. Adnan Tanriverdi, was a former general that got dismissed for his Islamist leanings after the 1997 coup, he founded SADAT in 2012.
Its also worth noting that in 2013 Turkish FM has criticized the French
operations in Mali, not to mention the discontent of Tanrıverdi, of the Counter terrorism being conducted by the Mali Authorities there.
In September 2017, Chad shut down the Qatari embassy, this
happened after Chad had Accused Qatar of financing terrorists and
Militias in Chad. However, the embassy was back in February
2018 upon signing a MOU with Qatar.
There is also the case of Qatari and Turkish Indirect support to Al
Shabab. Qatar is notoriously famous for its hefty cash payments
when it comes to terrorist groups, one of which is the very famous
incident in 2017 in Iraq where reportedly a billion-dollar ransom was paid.
In May 2020 Silvia Romano was released, after being
held as a hostage for 18 months, she was released after mediation
by Qatari and Turkish intelligence, of which including paying a
hefty ransom to Al Shabab.
The Turkish strategy in Africa, involves the take over on some African states.
The Turkish Gov would get Massive contracts for it's Companies mostly the Infrastructure.
However, it would also indirectly fund/supply terrorist groups there.
We have also seen many such cases that Turkey and Qatar would rush to act as mediators between the terrorist groups and these states.
Then there is the offer for a Military base/ training of Military personnel to cement their takeover of the state.
So, they end up having
1)Massive influence within the Military.
2)Massive influence due to the nature of their relationship with the terrorist groups.
3)Massive Control over the infrastructure, given that Turkish companies handle massive contracts there.
So how is Egypt planning to counter the rise of terrorism In such areas?
Egypt plans to counter such threat involved the Egyptian purposed Idea which involved a United Sahel army, which will be trained partially by the Egyptian Military.
In Feb, earlier this year Egypt hosted a meeting which involved the chiefs of staffs of the G5 Sahel states.
There were also the training exercises that involved Sudan, Burkina Faso and Nigeria
These states were included in addition to the other G5 Sahel states.
There was also the counterterrorism center in Cairo for the regional community of Sahel-Saharan states (CEN-SAD), which was fully constructed by mid 2018.
