you wanna get radicalized, be a lunch lady and get told you must throw away a child's hot meal and replace it with a barebones "meal" of white milk and cheese on white bread, all in front of their friends, b/c the child has "debt." and if you pay for it yourself, you're fired. https://twitter.com/errvin/status/1270564371249262592
i've talked about this a lot but i really cannot explain how it felt to watch kids literally beg for their food, possibly the only food they would get for the day, in front of the peers knowing if you did anything to try to stop it you'd just be fired.
i grew up on free lunch myself -- it's a program that feeds so many low income kids and most of them only went into "debt" b/c their parents didn't send in paperwork. and in case you are wondering yes it was the Black and Brown kids who got the public lunchroom shaming the most.
i ended up quiting that job for a lot of reasons, mainly that it was fucking awful and paid shit. during my time there, i put money in the kids accounts and let them steal extra fruit and milk. they knew if they came thru my line, they would eat.
other forms of school debt that should not exist: library fines. i knew ppl who were threatened with not graduating for like $10 fines. (i worked in my HS library and just wiped fines all the time -- i truly believe that stealing from institutions is a moral and good thing!)
