Following accounts affects their influence (both algorithmically and just from people looking and going, "wow, that person has a lot of followers, they must be worth listening to"). Lists do not!
Plus, if you have a dedicated "hate speakers" list, that shit isn't mixed into your normal timeline with the important political news and also your friends updating you about their lives! Seriously, it's a win-win for you to just USE PRIVATE TWITTER LISTS.
