As a white reporter, I must do more to fight racism I encounter in the newsroom. Here are some things to read on how to be a better ally. /1
First, big thanks to journalists of color who challenged me to do better, either directly, at conferences, or through their work. They include @nhannahjones @monicarhor @kimbriell @s_m_i @taylorirvine @tahtone @trahantreports @jasonbegay @jkteoh @sisiwei @emmacarew + more.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned and keep coming back to:
There’s a difference between stories ABOUT a community and stories that SERVE a community. There’s a difference between using people as characters and doing regular reporting that answers those people’s questions.

Journalism must change. We must do the things black journalists and other POC have been calling on us to do for decades. And white reporters like me must do the work, too, not just ask POC to take it on.
MANY journalists of color have shared their stories about being gaslit, pushed out, ignored, loaded with extra duties, dismissed as having less experience, paid less than white colleagues, etc.
Listen to them.

Promote them.
