#BlackintheIvory means being ashamed of what you had to do, how you had to walk, why you had to sell yourself, and when you had to hide you stories about where you were when anti-Blackness finally surpassed your educational achievements.
So many times, #BlackintheIvory has meant me defending the academic and psychological integrity of Black students who do not even know they are being lambasted behind their backs. It means standing up for them anyways, even when they direct their anger and suspicion towards you.
I cancelled class today because I spent the weekend at the hospital with my ailing parent because I am their adult caregiver.

Being overwhelmed with all the student loan debt you have accumulated even though you had fellowships amd scholarships throughout your entire educational career, so much so that you didn't sleep for 3 days trying to figure out how to avoid bankruptcy.

I am immumocompromised (like a lot of Black people) and so didn't recover from a bout of illness in enough time for me to find out the final exam room had changed. So you failed me, and I had to file a grievance with the Dean.

I am the only black student in an engineering course where study groups are formed voluntarily, and I still pass the class but dropped the major because I realized bridges cannot be built alone.

Removing the personal connection you have to your research because you don't want to be accused of doing "me-search". As in, every study I have ever done showing asthma disparities because I was diagnoses with asthma at age 3, like a lot of Black children.

#BlackintheIvory means constant rumination if an action, belief, or process you experienced is really "about race", and if so, whether you have the strength to pick today to be your battle day.
I decided a long time to live my life in the open, but reading the #BlackintheIvory reflections, I realize how much I have kept in the dark because I didn't want to accept that being #BlackintheIvory is not only my source of strength and pride but also my source of real trauma.
